Book Reading Session at Libermann Deaf School
The Ella Foundation recently hosted a vibrant Book Reading Session at Libermann Deaf School, bringing the magic of stories to deaf students through accessible, interactive storytelling.
Promoting Literacy in the Deaf Community
Reading is a gateway to knowledge, imagination, and opportunity. For deaf students, access to engaging reading materials and inclusive storytelling is essential for building strong literacy skills. Our session was designed to make reading fun, visual, and participatory — using sign language, expressive visuals, and hands-on activities to bring each story to life.
Students gathered eagerly as our facilitators shared stories that resonated with their experiences, dreams, and cultural backgrounds. Every page turned was met with curiosity, questions, and excitement.
Interactive Storytelling
Rather than a traditional read-aloud, our approach was fully interactive. Facilitators used sign language to narrate stories, encouraged students to act out scenes, and invited them to predict what might happen next. This method not only improved comprehension but also boosted confidence in self-expression.
Many students took turns signing parts of the story themselves, transforming the session into a collaborative celebration of language and creativity.
Inspiring a Love for Books
At the end of the session, each student received a book to take home — a small gift with a big message: that reading belongs to them, and that their stories matter too. Teachers at Libermann Deaf School expressed gratitude for the visit, noting how energized and motivated the students were.
